     Upside Down Tomatoes are any kind of tomato* you can plant in a basket or container that allows for the tomato plant's stem to grow out of the base. This is done primarily as a novelty. While there are several web sites that show how to build structures out of empty soda bottles, plastic barrels, and special structures, the idea is fairly basic and can be applied to several forms. Just remember these basics:

  1. *Small to medium sized tomato varieties work best. Cherry Tomato, Romas and similar would be good selections. Don't forget to visit the Tomato Cultivar List!
  2. You need a container with enough volume to support the root system. The same container will have to still be small enough that it can be mounted on something.
  3. You should always use a light weight soil mixture. Vermiculite and peat moss make excellent filler that don't add much weight on their own.
  4. You need a seedling to start off with that's at least got a small root ball. From any angle you can, place the root ball into the hopefully small hole at the bottom of your container that the plant will be growing out of. This is tricky because the hole has to be big enough to support a mature tomato stem, yet small enough not to lose much soil.
