Melons

Melons Main Page

Melons are the cream of the mid to late Summer crops, providing sweet fruit in abundance. In most cases they are planted mid to late Spring and harvested through Summer. In general, melons should be planted by forming mounds, overseeding the mounds with 4-8 seeds of any given variety of melon, and then thinning down to one or two of the healthiest vines after they've had a chance to germinate. Mounds should be no less than 6 feet apart as almost all melon cultivars will rapidly spread out and fill any free space with their vines. Water well until roots are established, and try to keep all water near the original mound, especially after melons begin forming. For specifics on the taste, special needs and difficulty of keeping a particular melon, please see the related articles at the bottom of this page.
